LEON LIFTS CITY WITH TON

Steven

Coventry City 2 - 0 Norwich City9th August 2008Former Norwich City striker Leon McKenzie came back to haunt his former club by sealing his 100th career goal and securing three points for the Sky Blues on the opening day of the 2008/09 season.Coventry City took the lead just after half-time thanks to a spot kick from Elliot Ward and McKenzie doubled the home sides advantage with five minutes to go giving Chris Coleman’s new look side a first day victory."It wasn't a good performance but the desire and will to win were good. We were desperate at times and we're a much better team than we showed today,” explained a rather relieved Coleman. Compulsory Football = Fascism.

Tom Goulding

A Wednesday afternoon, mid-February 2004. I’m standing in a field; next to a goal post if I’m to be specific, dressed in cringe-worthy private-school sports attire. You know the type: loose-fitting long sleeved black rugby top with a stiff white collar, overlapping rigid shorts of the same colour and minimal material which struggles to cover my knobbly knees. Below this, yellow and black striped football socks which, as well as identifying you with a “house”, also ironically label you as a delinquent sitting on a park bench with a two litre bottle of cider and a cheap cigarette. Last and regrettably least, a pair of football boots which have been reluctantly acquired from the bottom of the JBB bargain bucket; not because they’re cheap but because, well, you just don’t want them. The remote noise of fellow “team mates” screaming at each other for recognition of molecular existence becomes distorted as a brisk wind, carrying with it a chill factor of -6 degrees Celsius, envelopes their nonsensical whining and carries it off across acres of mud-churned land, closely resembling something out of All Quiet on the Western Front. This same wind wisps my hair, makes me sniff through inflamed nostrils… read more
