What am I in the eyes of my parents?
A son?
A child?
A responsibility?
What am I in the eyes of my sibling?
An older brother?
A bully?
A supporter?
What am I in my girlfriend’s eyes?
A lover?
A partner?
A possibility?
What am I in the public’s eyes?
A nobody?
A non entity?
An unknown?
What am I in your eyes?
A dreamer?
An insecure man?
A writer/poet?
When I look in the mirror
A stranger looks back.
That man cannot be me
He’s too fat,
Too old,
Too uncouth.
So I should ask to be judged
By my achievements and work.
Judge me by my thoughts
And what lurks in my heart.
For you then shall find a friend
In this mess of a man.

Thanks Pete. I'll try to find that Burns poem, sounds very interesting.

Sincere and profound. A variation on the Burns poem about having the power to see ourselves as we are seen by others - and maybe it isn't flattering. McNiece said that poetry was his road to knowledge, and there is self-knowledge in this poem of yours.

When dealing with truth, the best place... or rather the only place to start, is within. Best wishes! <3

I think too often in life we are handed a role and persona by others, which I would argue is greatly based on our looks and way we express ourselves, like our tone, accent and so on. People seem to judge how much money someone has by the way they speak, and thus project a personality onto them like

Here, here! Recently I engaged in a conversation about this sort of thing. I said "I see deeper than you" b/c I see the heart, the human, the feeling, the likeness of all... but in the opinion of the one to whom I spoke I am more shallow because of it. Because I don't look at actions and deeds and "net value". So I wonder then, what is depth? Am I wrong for not judging people based on what is obvious? Am I wrong for not caring what a person does for a living or even how they live their life? We're all a mess. For those few who think they've got it all figured out, I have to wonder why they get out of bed. Much love!
