- Punk and clothes
"clothes are great, and wear 'em well, but it's what you're thinking, that's what makes you dangerous".... John "Johnny Rotten" Lydon

I actually think Mr Lydon has attained charm with age - although he did have a sort of naughty disruptive schoolboy charisma about him - I think if "punk" inspired people to think there were alternatives to the mainstream culture - alternatives to the status quo - that has to be good. But there were also bad side effects - such as amphetamine and heroin use which were definitely related to the 'scene'. But then I guess it was always a part of Rock'n'Roll. In the end I think it is better to have the big ego and think for yourself - rather than hang on the words of musicians who are just trying to sell words, sounds and magazine space.

I think we all are like that, the thing is, we dont go around walking like we own the world because we are to stick up to what other people tell us is good or bad, i live in a place where things are really bad i do wish there were more people like me [i know, i have a big ego] with eyes open, people have a really close mind, im not saying, lets go around and do this and do that, but ones people start to opens their eyes you can feel the change, thats what, from my very personal point of view, was the "charm" of the pistols.

Signing to EMI/Virgin was a sell out for a Punk band (Sex Pistols) - but then McLaren was the manager. The butter ads pale into insignificance in comparison to Sex Pistols doing "revival" gigs - really sad. Don't think he was ever really dangerous or "rotten" just a spotty teenager with a chip on his shoulder. BUT - this quote and many things he said and wrote in lyrics did and do hold a ray of truth - and whatever criticism you can throw in the 'Pistols" direction their fame / infamy did change the music scene certainly in the UK. Hyla quite rightfully pointed out to me that the Ramones were using the term "Punk Music" way before anyone else - but it became a genre really through the Pistols front page publicity after the Grundy TV episode.

The love of money is the root of all evil.

I wouldn't say such thing about rotten, he is the first one who admist his love for money!!! Once you admit it doesn't really makes you a sell out =p But i do wonder now about the ads xD
